It’s Vino’s one-day league, but we also planned an early Fathers’ Day dinner later in the day.
We started the day early because the call time was 7:30AM. One-day leagues are not new for us, but a 7:30AM call time 22 minutes away (by car) from our place is kinda new.
We packed some snacks for Vino and two water bottles for all of us. It was going to be a minimum four matches depending on their performance.
Their group had five teams, with the two top teams moving on to the next stage. All games were played for 10 minutes, no halves.
Vino’s team is not his usual one, as it’s a combined group from the East Coast team with their West Coast team.
The goalkeepers did not join this league, so Vino had the opportunity to play goalkeeper for the whole tournament.

They had a couple of great guys from the other team, and they surprisingly played well with each other. Vino didn’t have to work a lot for the first three games as the offense was humming and the defense did a great job keeping the ball away from the goal.
They won their first three matches with a goal difference of 7 – all clean sheets.
For their last game, they were going to go up against the all-girls team. You’d think it should be easy, but since we watched the girls team, we knew they were going to be trouble.
Those girls were really good. Spacing, power, accuracy, and defense were all on point. They were also undefeated in their first three games, and while they conceded two goals, they were scoring a lot on the boys.
Vino’s team hung tough and forced the girls to play a bit disorganized compared to their first three games. They got an early goal from a midcourt free kick, which proved to be the only goal in the match.
In the round of 32, they managed another clean sheet and two goals.
The boys were riding high in the round of 16. Unfortunately, they went up against a team that’s on another level.
Vino conceded five goals but had a couple of incredible saves, one of which was a jumping block that would have gone in if it were any other goalie.
Still, he was crying by the third conceded goal as he was frustrated at himself.
By the end of it, practically all the kids were crying because they fell off the tournament. All of us parents were kinda friends already and we tried to console each other’s kids.
I told Vino he must have the memory of a goldfish when he plays so he can move on quickly and focus on blocking the next goal.
But they had a good run, and we made sure everyone knew we were proud of them.

Later, we went out for dinner for Father’s Day. Che was leaving for the PH on Sunday, so we decided to do something before she left.
We had a bit of a stroll and a nice dinner at MBS as our little celebration.
Honestly, Father’s Day is one of the days I don’t really celebrate much. It’s not because I don’t appreciate it, but because I get to live it every day.
As a full time dad, I get to enjoy being a hands-on father and husband, and I get thanked and loved everyday for doing what I dreamt of doing in life.
For all the fathers out there, I raise a glass and offer a salute to you for doing what you do for your families.
