Sunday was free and easy for us, as we didn’t have a set agenda except for last-minute shopping for Christmas treats.
The day started super early, as Vino got up at around 6am. We asked him to sleep more, but I think he got up after I fell asleep. He said he wants to “maximize” the morning, which meant getting to start playing on his tablet early.
Some of his friends call as early as 7am. While it’s nice that they connect with each other, I’ve cautioned him about house rules of different families. I told him that calls are meant to have a caller and a receiver, so it’s not gonna happen if he doesn’t accept their calls.
I feel like kids would blame him for answering the call if they get in trouble, because kids tend to deflect blame to others to avoid punishment (don’t we all, though?). So I told him to just try and avoid being in that situation by not answering calls before 8am and after 9pm.
This day also marked the final time John Cena will be wrestling in a WWE ring, so I had to check it out.
I feel like there’s no true “retirement” from wrestling. I mean, Ric Flair was taking bumps until maybe he was over 60 years old or so. But this whole retirement tour for Cena felt really like an end of an era.
I can’t say I followed his whole career. At some point, wrestling was out of my life because I didn’t have access to it, and I didn’t want to spend to have access to it. While I probably had the time to watch it, I didn’t want to follow it as I did because I have a tendency to deep-dive things I’m interested in.
What I could say, was that watching him in this “last” match had an old-school feel to it. Back then, there was suspension of disbelief, and there was good versus evil. These days, characters change from faces to heels depending on the crowd. Cena crossed a bridge to the current era, I believe.
When he was wrestling, he no-sold on some things to pull off key moves. He was doing the Hulk Hogan-getting-pumped-up-by-the-crowd thing like it was the 90s.
Then he tapped out. The guy whose mantra was “never give up” just gave up after relentless sleeper holds. It’s a move that they use off a clothesline – it’s not even a finisher.
I think there’s a story to be told on why the finish happened the way it did, but maybe my inner 90’s wrestling fan was just hoping for a face win like the old days.
They got a lot of heat for it, though. The fans chanted “you f***ed up!” when Triple H went out, and Gunther – the dude who beat Cena – was booed out of the building. Cena and Trips laughed as they hugged in the middle of the ring as they heard the crowd going crazy.
Anyway, I was able to watch all this as Che had to leave for an appointment in the afternoon. Meanwhile, Vino and I stayed and had ramen for lunch.
We soon followed Che so that we can buy some things for the Christmas parties that we’re heading to during the holidays. We went to a couple of venues before heading out to Church.
Che and I have been discussing cathecism classes for Vino so that he could get ready for Holy Communion. We didn’t realize that his situation is a bit more complicated than ours.
He doesn’t go to a Catholic school, so there’s no religion classes in school. Being that we’re in Singapore, he apparently needs to attend a program before being eligible for cathecism classes.
We’ll probably get him to do it next year when we return. He falls asleep during the homily, and I don’t want to sound like my dad when getting him to stay awake while listening to a sermon he doesn’t really understand because of a lack of context and interest.
After the mass, we had dinner at Great World City mall, hoping we’d get to shop for more things. Unfortunately, Vino had a toilet emergency and we had to go home because there were no bidets in the mall.
Che started packing our things for the trip to the Philippines.
She’s a genius in this, so my only contribution here is to put out my clothes and whatever else she asks me to do – like get her water or push the air out of vacuum packs.
There’s still a lot to pack, but she already filled out one bag of stuff. After that got done, we went on to finish our K-Drama for closure and a good night’s sleep.
