My birthday is almost always a double-celebration for us because Mother’s Day follows it.
Almost eight years ago, this day became a regular celebration for the family that we built for ourselves.
It’s not always a grand celebration or a day where we give huge gifts for Che, but I always try to make it a point to let her do what she wants and go out of her way.
For this year’s celebration, we just had an activity together, and later Vino and I got out of her way so she can sleep and relax before going for dinner. We ended the day with a very Mother’s Day movie – The Meg 2, because they watched the first movie last week.

With me being primarily a housedad, she would be the main income-generating parent. It’s an unconventional setup, but one that we decided on when we planned out having a baby.
This allowed us to fulfill both of our goals – her proving her skills in the corporate world and me being a present dad for Vino. But as with every choice, there is always that alternative that was not picked.
For Che, it meant letting go of some duties as a mother – bringing Vino to school, going with him on his playdates, cooking for him, attending his school activities, and the like.
But like the amazing woman she is, she would always find a way to do some of it from time to time.
From where I stand, Che has always been someone who bleeds excellence. Even when she says she’s mailing in her efforts, you’d see that it’s still better than other people’s efforts.
That’s why even if she says she has given up being a mother so she could focus on chasing her corporate goals, she never truly does.
When I sometimes think about not being able to do things because I feel there’s not enough time, it’s really because I see her be amazing everyday.
To Che, and to all the amazing mothers, Happy Mother’s Day.
Know that you deserve all the love that you get and more.
